"Of Mice and Men" Literature Analysis

The book I read “Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck starts off with two workers named George and Lennie. The exposition reveals that Lennie is a large, hulking man with a mental disability well George is the direct opposite of Lennie, in that he is very small in comparison. George is basically the care taker of Lennie and they both dream of eventually owning their own farm. They continue from towards a farm where George lies about Lennie in order to get them both hired. The plot advances when they are both hired to work on the farm and George reveals the true story between him and Lennie to Slim. Later Slim gives Lennie a puppy and Carlson puts down Candy's dog. Later Lennie breaks Curley's hand by accident when he attempts to pick a fight with him. The next day when everyone left the farm except for Lennie, Curley's wife found him and he accidently broke her neck killing her. He then retreats to a spot previously marked by George where he should run to if there is any trouble. During the climax George puts Lennie down out of mercy so inhibit the Curley from lynching Lennie.
I feel that the theme of "Of Mice and Men" is the impossibility of achieving the American dream. Many characters through the story talk about how they would rather have another life and dream of what it will be like. George and Lennie for example want to get a farm of their own with rabbits for Lennie but, they never actually achieve this. Another example would be Curley's wife who wanted to be a movie star instead of marrying Curley.
The tone in "Of Mice and Men" is realistic, sympathetic, and tragic."Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place. . . . With us it ain't like that. We got a future."(Ch.1) This is a good example of the tone in that it is very brutal and sheds light on how the world is for most people who have no one. Another example of the tone would be "All kin's a vegetables in the garden, and if we want a little whisky we can sell a few eggs or something, or some milk. We'd jus' live there. We'd belong there." (Ch. 1). This quote is just another example of the tone in that it shows how Steinbeck is sympathetic towards his characters by giving them dreams to strive for. “Le’s do it now,” Lennie says. “Le’s get that place now.” George agrees. This is the tragic component of the tone when George had to put Lennie down in order to prevent him from being lynched by the farmhands.
Imagery-"A few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to the hillside bank and runs deep and green. The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool." (Ch.1)
Motif-"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place. . . . With us it ain't like that. We got a future."(Ch.1)
Metaphor- “Lennie covered his face with his huge paws.” (Ch.1)
Symbol-"All kin's a vegetables in the garden, and if we want a little whisky we can sell a few eggs or something, or some milk. We'd jus' live there. We'd belong there." (Ch. 1).
Simile-"the rabbits sat as quietly as little grey sculptured stones." (Pg 19)
Foreshadowing- "I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Jesus Christ, somebody'd shoot you for a coyote if you was by yourself." (Pg 12)
Hyperbole-"...and the cream is so God damn thick you got to cut it with a knife and take it out with a spoon."(Ch.1)
Allusion- “Murray and Ready's: a Depression-era employment agency" (Pg 21)
Onomatopoeia-"Through the open door came the thuds and occasional clangs of a horseshoe game...," (page 38)
Personification-"The shade climbed up the hill towards the top." (Ch. 2)

Poem Essay

Our Generation
by Derek Nichols
Our generation will be known for nothing.
Never will anybody say,
We were the peak of mankind.
That is wrong, the truth is
Our generation was a failure.
Thinking that
We actually succeeded
Is a waste. And we know
Living only for money and power
Is the way to go.
Being loving, respectful, and kind
Is a dumb thing to do.
Forgetting about that time,
Will not be easy, but we will try.
Changing our world for the better
Is something we never did.
Giving up
Was how we handled our problems.
Working hard
Was a joke.
We knew that
People thought we couldn’t come back
That might be true,
Unless we turn things around

This was supposed to be a comparison of poems that were presented on the course blog but despondently I had to force my hand to produce another work that in my state of mind would be more fitting then to casually compare works of poetry.  This isn’t because I can’t compare poetry it’s just that poetry is meant to be interpreted any way the reader is subjected to, making poetry very ambiguous. Not to be dissected and examined like something outside of the realm of comprehension if otherwise left alone. This is also because of the numerous discussions in the classroom over the state of current events the lie within the confines of our feasible reality.
The poem “Our Generation” by an astounding 8th grader was an eye opener for me, who of late has just sat in agony over the current state of our generation or should I say humanity instead? The reasons being that no one strives for change at all and just accept the way the world is, other than the occasional cry for relief through the media like it’s going to be given to them. However that isn’t completely true with all of humanity there are a “few” that attempt this climb to do something other than society intended but they are usually devoured by the lack of support.  This being said reading the poem the first way, yes our race as a whole will most likely be condemned to fester in the dirt after being pushed down.
This could be prevented, are so called inevitable fate, if only we take the time to go in reverse so that in the end we can move forward to a spark of imagination of our design. This would be quite feasible if only we take the time to work together as a whole, to fight all the odds that relentlessly fight back against our touch. Humankind is resilient and is presented abundant challenges in this universe but these challenges define us to push headfirst into the abyss. Being thrown back enough times into the dirt we find ourselves to give up that’s why the evident need for reinforcement from others is needed so that we can finally lift up and mark a superior future for humanity. This is what seems apparent from reading the poem in the reverse.

"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" Notes

.Time is scarce don't waste it in a manner you yourself consider a waste not off someone else's notions on how to spend you're time.
.Procrastination is a detrimental problem in this era due to all the "helpful" tools that devote themselves this concept.
.Not enough time to live with constant attacks from procrastination, therefore you must decimate this issue or subject your life to it's choices.
.Don't wallow in self pity while you're left contemplating life.

INTRO TO POETRY

1. “Out Beyond Ideas” represents in my opinion the escape from reality in a realm where all you see is what can never be spoken.
2. The tone of this poem is the author’s idea of the huge magnitude of anything in the world that is indescribable, which is also the point he makes clear to the audience by the end.
3. My mood is hard to describe in that the poem fills me with a grim reminder but a hint of hope to solve this bleak idea.
4. Yes from where it begins in our reality into a metaphysical one where speech is at the epicenter of the unspeakable.
5. The anything and everything in our reality is too much for words and by the end will most likely never understand it all.

These questions clarified my rough ideas of what this poem could be about and with their guidance I was able to distinguish what exactly the author was providing in this short collection of meaningful words.
